How Do I Know if I Have Woodworm?

Woodworm often goes unnoticed for years because the larvae do their damage deep inside the wood. By the time you see the "exit holes," the infestation has already matured.

The Key Warning Signs:

Fresh Exit Holes

Small, round holes (1mm to 2mm) in timber, looking like "dartboard" marks.

Bore Dust (Frass)

A fine, powdery substance found below the holes—this is actually beetle droppings.

Tunnels (Galleries)

If a piece of wood breaks, you may see "galleries" or tunnels where the larvae have traveled.

Damaged/Crumbly Edges

Especially on floorboards and roof joists.

Live Beetles

Seeing adult beetles (usually between May and September) emerging from the wood.

Common Types of Wood-Boring Beetles

As specialists we know how important it is to identify the species

The Barrier Woodworm Eradication Process

Simply spraying the surface of the wood isn't enough.
Our process ensures the infestation is killed from the inside out:

1

Specialist Timber Survey

We determine if the infestation is "Active" or historic.
2

Surface Preparation

We clean the timbers of dust and debris to ensure maximum absorption of the treatment.
3

Deep-Penetration Treatment

We apply high-performance, water-based insecticides via spray or injection. These fluids travel deep into the "galleries" to kill larvae.
4

Growth Regulators

Our treatments include chemicals that prevent any remaining eggs from hatching.
5

Structural Assessment

If the "frassing" is too deep, we identify timbers that need to be reinforced or replaced.

Why Woodworm Loves Damp Homes

Woodworm larvae prefer timber with a slightly higher moisture content (usually over 12%). This is why infestations are most common in damp lofts, poorly ventilated sub-floors, and cellars. By choosing Barrier, we don't just kill the beetles; we can address the underlying damp or condensation issues that attracted them in the first place, ensuring they never return.

Woodworm FAQ

Questions about Woodworm? We've got the answers.

Yes. We use modern, low-odor, water-based treatments. In most cases, you only need to vacate the treated room for a few hours until the timber is dry.

Absolutely. All our specialist woodworm treatments come with a 20-year guarantee, which stays with the property if you decide to sell.

If the conditions are right (damp and untreated wood), beetles can move from structural timbers to wooden furniture. Treating the structural infestation is the best way to protect your belongings.
